My Workshops
Teaching Hacks!
The first year of teaching can be quite a challenge, and so much learning happens along the way. In this session, I share tips and tricks that have worked in my classroom (learned via trial and error!) and participants discuss what has and has not worked in their experiences so far. Topics include time management, classroom management, interacting with parents, organization, and building relationships. Participants will walk away with many ideas and items that can immediately be implemented into their K12 classroom.
Increasing Engagement (and Making Your Life Easier!) with Technology
Using technology in the classroom is one of the best ways to increase student motivation, interest, and engagement. As an added bonus, it also makes YOUR teaching life SO much easier! Come to this session to learn about a plethora of technologies--from low tech to high tech options; from physical objects to apps, extensions, and websites; and more! You will leave this session invigorated, excited, and brimming with ideas for future use! Suitable for all grade levels.
Flipping the Science Classroom
Have you heard about "flipped classrooms?" Are you are entertaining the thought of trying it out? Do you simply want to learn more about this style of teaching to see if it's for you? Such a system turns you into a facilitator and puts all learning responsibility in the hands of students. Through trial/error and constant student feedback, I was able to create a system that works very well in my 10th grade Biology classroom. In this workshop, I share the research and background about the flipped movement, go through the logistics of creating such a class, and share tips/tricks I learned as I flipped my class. If given enough time, I also provide work time and support participants in transforming a traditional unit into a flipped unit.
Learning STEM using Arduino, an Open-Source Electronic Platform
I received the Milton Pella grant from WSST in 2016 to purcahse Arudino kits (and related materials) for my Applied STEM course. My goal was to expose students in such a small, rural school to technology and opportunities that they may not otherwise experience, due to the fact that our school has about 50% free-and-reduced lunch. Using the Arudino kits, students learned the science, technology, and math related to circuits. The knowledge was then applied to small computer programming and engineering projects. Pre- and post-unit surveys were given to guage student interest in the four general STEM areas and their thoughts on using Arudino.
